Quick answer: Choose Mailchimp if your main job is managing a marketing audience and sending a regular newsletter. Put Brevo on the shortlist if you need to assess both campaigns and transactional messages. Neither choice should be made from a starting price alone: count the contacts you will store, the messages you will send, and the people who must work in the account.
Reader fit: This is for a small service business with a website signup form and a lean team. It is a source-based buying guide, not a deliverability test or a claim that we ran both products. Product documentation was checked on October 2, 2026. Plan details vary by region and change; confirm the checkout shown in your own country and currency.
Mailchimp vs Brevo: the decision in one table
On a phone, swipe the table sideways to see every column.
| Question | Mailchimp | Brevo |
|---|---|---|
| What will drive the bill? | Review the marketing plan, contact total across audiences and send allowance. | Review the chosen email volume, contact storage allowance and any add-ons. |
| What should the team test first? | One audience, signup, segmentation and a newsletter. | A signup and campaign; test transactional sending separately if needed. |
| Where can a small team stumble? | Multiple audiences can count the same person more than once. | Do not assume the entry plan includes every automation, seat or sending need. |
| What should decide? | Can the editor reliably maintain the audience and campaign? | Can the team run the required message types within the actual plan? |
Mailchimp’s pricing-plan guide explains its contact total, including subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts; archived, cleaned and deleted contacts are excluded from that total. Its audience guide recommends one primary audience because duplicates across audiences increase the count. Brevo’s plan guide ties tiers to email volume and sets a contact-storage limit for each tier. These are different costing models, so use your expected workload rather than comparing two headline prices.
Separate three jobs before you shop
1. Marketing newsletter
You need a permission-based list, a signup route, an editor, an unsubscribe path and a repeatable sending process. Mailchimp is a natural candidate when that is the main job. Brevo can also handle campaigns. In either product, check how a new signup is labeled and how unsubscribes are recorded. Mailchimp’s contact-status guide distinguishes subscribed and other contact types; it also warns that legal requirements can differ by jurisdiction.
2. Transactional email
An appointment confirmation or receipt has a different purpose from a newsletter. Brevo documents marketing and transactional email as separate categories. If this job matters, write down which system creates the event, who maintains the sending domain and where failures are reviewed. Check the exact plan and integration before treating either platform as your operational mail service.
3. Sales follow-up
A campaign platform does not by itself guarantee that somebody owns a quote request. If your team loses the next action after a form submission, start with the shared inbox or CRM decision. Keep permission for marketing separate from a customer’s request for a reply.
An illustrative service-business choice
Imagine a two-person accounting firm with 1,200 stored contacts, one monthly advice email and a website form for consultation requests. These figures are fictional, not our test results.
Price the same workload in both tools:
- Audience: review duplicates and record which contacts are eligible for the newsletter.
- Campaigns: estimate the monthly advice email, routine test sends and likely list growth.
- Operational messages: list appointment confirmations separately from the newsletter.
- People: identify the editor and anyone else who needs account access.
- Quote: record the country, currency, billing period and plan that covers this workload.
Use the trial result to decide:
- Newsletter is the main job: test whether the editor can build, review and schedule it without creating overlapping audiences.
- Campaigns and transactional sending are both required: test the specific Brevo route and its plan limits.
- Consultation requests are being missed: fix inbox or CRM ownership before buying more email features.
A 45-minute trial that reveals more than a feature list
- Write down expected stored contacts, marketing subscribers, monthly campaign sends, transactional sends and account users. Use a range for the next 12 months.
- Create a fictional signup and an unsubscribe test in each shortlisted tool. Do not import real customers into a trial without your normal permission process.
- Ask the actual editor to build one mobile-friendly campaign and send a test to internal addresses. Check how the editor corrects a mistake.
- Inspect the account’s audience or contact count and compare it with your estimate. In Mailchimp, check whether duplicates exist across audiences. In Brevo, check both volume and storage limits.
- Export a small fictional test set and identify who will own the sending domain, templates and list hygiene.
Content check before the tool trial: Write one useful answer to a real customer question and outline the next two issues before opening either editor. If no one can own those messages, a larger send allowance will not solve the work. The three-issue newsletter routine gives the editor a compact template and a pause rule to test in both products.
Decision rule: Buy the plan that supports the workflow the team actually completed, with room for predictable growth. If the team cannot identify the consent state or confidently send and review one campaign, delay the paid commitment and simplify the process.
Limits and next step
Official documentation establishes what the vendors describe, not comparative deliverability, support quality in your region or your final invoice. Promotions, taxes, billing cycles, add-ons and plan gates can change. Verify them in the live checkout before paying. For a structured test of signup, welcome message and unsubscribe, read our GetResponse subscriber-journey guide; its method works with either shortlist. If your form also creates sales work, read the enquiry-form field guide before connecting systems.
GetResponse option (affiliate link): If your main requirement is a permission-based welcome sequence, you can check GetResponse’s current plans and trial options against the same signup, unsubscribe and ownership checks. Useful detail: A click spike can be a scanner, not a customer
Mailchimp documents that non-human activity, including antivirus scans, can inflate campaign opens and clicks.
For the comparison, include a reporting question: what evidence distinguishes email activity from a useful subscriber action? Compare both vendors on the same definition rather than their largest dashboard number.
Try this:
- Keep the campaign and landing-page time windows together.
- Check the platform’s bot-filtering definition for the selected report.
- Use a confirmed reply, completed request or other agreed action for business outcomes; do not relabel all reported clicks as people.
