Wix vs Squarespace for a Small Service Website: Choose by Editing and Handover

Fictional small-business colleagues two colleagues testing a service website template on laptop and phone Website Builders

Quick answer: Choose between Wix and Squarespace by asking who will maintain the site, how the mobile page must be arranged, where enquiries go, and what you would need to move later. Wix Editor gives the operator a dedicated mobile editor; Squarespace 7.1 Fluid Engine lets the operator arrange blocks separately for mobile. Neither distinction replaces a real enquiry and handover test.

For: a small service business building a brochure, service and contact site in the US, UK, Canada or Australia. This is a source-based workflow comparison, not a tested speed ranking or a price quote. Features and plan access can change; verify the exact setup before paying.

Who should shortlist each?

Wix fits when the person doing routine updates wants to work in Wix Editor and is willing to check its mobile view after each layout change. Wix says its Editor creates a mobile version from desktop content and provides mobile-specific controls. Desktop changes affect the mobile version, while mobile edits do not change desktop. Wix mobile Editor guidance.

Squarespace fits when the team prefers its page editing flow and the proposed site uses version 7.1 Fluid Engine sections. Squarespace documents separate arrangement, resizing and hiding of blocks on mobile for those sections. That statement does not cover every site version or section type. Squarespace Fluid Engine mobile guidance.

Neither is a good fit yet if the owner cannot identify who receives enquiries, who controls the domain, or how they will recover content needed for a future move. Settle those operational questions before choosing from templates.

Question Wix check Squarespace check
Mobile service page Open Wix Editor’s mobile view; check hidden elements and the contact action. On a 7.1 Fluid Engine page, arrange blocks in mobile view; check the contact action.
Enquiry ownership Set form notification recipients and the follow-up owner. Choose form storage and confirm the person who monitors it.
Routine editing Have the future operator change a service detail and publish. Have the same operator make the same change and publish.
Future move List content and assets that must be rebuilt or exported separately. Check which content is covered by its WordPress XML export and which is not.

The enquiry checks follow Wix’s form notification guidance and Squarespace’s form storage guidance. These describe available routes, not proof that a particular business’s inbox is monitored. Use a safe test submission on your own site and check the destination and response owner.

Do the mobile check with actual content

Build one service page with the real length of a service description, a representative image, a contact action and a short FAQ. Review it at a narrow phone width. Ask the operator to find the contact action, understand the offer and complete the form without zooming sideways. The editor preview is a starting point; also open the published page on a phone.

Wix says some desktop elements that are not optimized for mobile can be hidden automatically, so inspect the hidden-elements panel when something appears missing. Squarespace says its sites adapt to mobile, but large media and dense content can still cause problems. Its Fluid Engine guidance recommends reviewing mobile layout as new blocks are added. See Wix’s mobile note and Squarespace’s mobile checklist.

Treat the domain and content separately

A domain connection is not the same as the ability to move the built website to another host. Wix says a Wix site must operate on Wix servers, although a domain registered elsewhere can connect to it. Squarespace offers an XML export for certain content into WordPress, but explicitly says not everything exports. Read the actual export coverage before relying on a future migration plan: Wix hosting and export explanation; Squarespace export coverage.

For either platform, record the domain registrar, DNS manager, billing owner, form destination, site owner and backup operator. Ask the builder to show the owner how to change service hours and how to find a failed submission. Our website handover checklist gives a fuller acceptance record.

A hypothetical two-person consultancy

Suppose two consultants need a home page, three service pages and one enquiry form. The owner changes service copy monthly; an assistant handles enquiries. Their decisive test is not which demo template looks more polished. On each platform, the owner edits a service page while the assistant checks an enquiry arrives in the agreed destination. They then inspect the published page on a phone and record who can repair the form if it fails.

If both pass, compare the operator’s actual steps, the scope of any paid plan and the handover terms in writing. If one cannot route the form to a monitored destination under the proposed configuration, hold that choice until the team resolves the gap. No conversion difference is inferred from this example.

A useful next step

Write a one-page brief with the page list, primary enquiry route, routine editor, mobile acceptance checks and exit requirements. Ask each proposed builder to show that same workflow. Use the website quote comparison to compare scope, and our builder selection guide if a third platform remains in contention.

Useful detail: An unhidden mobile button may no longer be pinned

Wix Editor says desktop pinned elements can be unhidden on mobile, but they are no longer pinned there.

Finding the missing enquiry button is only the first check. Scroll through a long service page and decide whether its mobile position still gives customers a clear route at the moment they need it.

Try this:

  1. Unhide the intended element in the mobile editor if necessary.
  2. Preview the page at the top, middle and bottom.
  3. Choose a supported mobile layout, then check that the public button remains usable without covering important content.
